Morphological and genetic diversity in Callithrix hybrids in an anthropogenic area in southeastern Brazil (Primates: Cebidae: Callitrichinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Cezar,Adrielle M.; Pessôa,Leila M.; Bonvicino,Cibele R..
ABSTRACT Two species of Callithrix, C. jacchus (Linnaeus, 1758) and C. penicillata (É. Geoffroy, 1812), are considered invasive in Rio de Janeiro. This study determined the genetic and morphological diversity and verified the species involved in the hybridization of 10 individuals from the municipalities of Silva Jardim (N = 9) and Rio das Ostras (N = 1). We compared the external morphology and skull of C. jacchus (N = 15) and C. penicillata (N = 14) specimens deposited in the collection of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro (MN- UFRJ). Phylogenetic (maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference) and phylogeographical analyses (network analysis) were performed based on cytochrome b sequences. These analyses included hybrids from the metropolitan region of...

Morphological and Morphometric Study of the Muscle Fibers and Neuromuscular Junctions of the Extensor Digitorum Longus in Aged Rats Submitted to Maternal Protein Restriction International Journal of Morphology
Jeronimo,L. C; Confortim,H. D; Centenaro,L. A; Brancalhão,R. M. C; Pinheiro,P. F. F; Matheus,S. M. M; Torrejais,M. M.
Protein restriction implies the functional involvement of several systems and organs, including the skeletal muscle, because it is a protein reservoir in the body. This study sought to analyze the morphological and morphometric features of the muscle fibers and neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle in rats at 365 days of age, submitted to maternal protein restriction during the gestation and lactation periods. Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a Control Group - mothers fed a normal-protein diet (17 % protein) during pregnancy and lactation; and a Restricted Group - mothers fed a low-protein diet (6 % protein) during pregnancy and lactation. The pups were kept with the mother throughout the lactation period (21...

Morphological caste studies in the neotropical swarm-founding Polistinae wasp Angiopolybia pallens (Lepeletier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) Neotropical Entomology
Gelin,Luiz F.F.; Cruz,Jucelho D. da; Noll,Fernando B.; Giannotti,Edilberto; Santos,Gilberto M. de M.; Bichara-Filho,Carlos C..
Neotropical swarm-founding wasps present polygynic colonies and a great variation in relation to caste differentiation, ranging from species in which queens and workers are similar in shape and size to those where variation in shape and size is conspicuous. Canonical discriminant analysis and Bonferroni t-test analysis on morphometric data collected from eight body parts of specimens from nine colonies of Angiopolybia pallens (Lepeletier) were undertaken as a step towards to a better understanding on caste differenciation in Epiponini. All specimens were dissected to verify the ovary developmental stage, and the spermatheca was removed to check for the mating status. Females were then grouped as queens (mated with developed ovaries), intermediates (virgin...

Morphological changes of carotid bodies in acute respiratory distress syndrome: a morphometric study in humans BJMBR
Vinhaes,E.N.G.; Dolhnikoff,M.; Saldiva,P.H.N..
Carotid bodies are chemoreceptors sensitive to a fall of partial oxygen pressure in blood (hypoxia). The morphological alterations of these organs in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in people living at high altitude are well known. However, it is not known whether the histological profile of human carotid bodies is changed in acute clinical conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The objective of the present study was to perform a quantitative analysis of the histology of carotid bodies collected from patients who died of ARDS. A morphometric study of carotid bodies collected during routine autopsies was carried out on three groups: patients that died of non-respiratory diseases (controls, N = 8),...

Morphological characterization and sex-related differences of the mandible of the armadillos Chaetophractus vellerosus and Zaedyus pichiy (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae), with consideration of dietary aspects Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Sidorkewicj,Nora S.; Casanave,Emma B..
The morphological characteristics of the mandible of adult Chaetophractus vellerosus (Gray, 1865) and Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) were studied to establish its generalized design and to identify inter- and intra- (sexual) specific differences. Morphological descriptions were complemented with the application of univariate and multivariate (analysis of correlation matrices, PCA, discriminant analysis) techniques. The mandible of both species is very similar, and is characterized by elevated condyle, well developed angular process, distinct coronoid process, tooth row which extends to the rear end of the angle between body and ramus, and unfused but firm symphysis. Although both armadillos are omnivorous, a more slender configuration of the jaw in Z....

Morphological diversity of fish along the rio das Velhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Junqueira,Nara Tadini; Leal,Cecília Gontijo; Alves,Carlos Bernardo Mascarenhas; Pompeu,Paulo Santos.
The rio das Velhas, located in central Minas Gerais State (Brazil), is a major tributary of the rio São Francisco. Despite several anthropogenic pressures, this basin supports more than 115 fish species. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological space occupied by fish assemblages in four regions (headwaters, upper, middle, and lower course) along the channel of the rio das Velhas. We try to answer the following question: Is there a change in the morphological organization of the fish along the longitudinal gradient of the river? Individuals from 67 species, collected at several sites in the basin from 1999 to 2008, were measured for 11 morphological attributes related to swimming behavior and habitat use. Through the graphs, the first two...

Morphological identification of two southwest Atlantic loliginid squids: Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis OceanDocs
Pineda, S.E.; Hernandez, D.R.; Brunetti, N.E.; Jerez, B..
Morphological characters of two loliginid squids, Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis, in the SW Atlantic region off Argentina were studied to obtain a diagnostic criterion for their identification. Emphasis was placed on the taxonomic characters suitable to identify individuals in the whole size range. Considering the uncertainty associated to the correct identification of juveniles, their taxonomic status was confirmed using electrophoretic studies. Discrimination between species based on morphological characters proved to be more effective than meristic counts. A discriminant function that allows an easy separation of the two species is presented. The function, composed of two indices: fin width mantle length (FW/ML)and gladius width mantle length...

Melo,Carina Guimarães de Souza; Shinohara,André Luis; Andreo,Jesus Carlos; Rodrigues,Antonio de Castro.
The progress of science in search of new techniques of the nerve regeneration and the functional repair in reinnervated muscle has been the target of many researchers around the world. Consequently, nerves and muscles in different body segments asked for more enlightenment of their morphology, their interrelation with other anatomic structures and their peculiarities. One of the most significant areas that need deeper studies is the region of the head and neck, since they are often affected by important pathologies. In order to offer the researcher's community a morphological myoneural interaction model, this study elected the levator labii superioris muscle and its motor nerve, the buccal branch of the facial nerve (VII pair) not only for its special...

Morphology of the shell of Happiella cf. insularis (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia: Systrophiidae) from three forest areas on Ilha Grande, Southeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Barbosa,Amilcar Brum; Santos,Sonia Barbosa dos.
We conducted a study on shell morphology variation among three populations of Happiella cf. insularis (Boëttger, 1889) inhabiting different areas (Jararaca, Caxadaço, and Parnaioca trails) at Vila Dois Rios, Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Linear and angular measurements, shell indices representing shell shape, and whorl counts were obtained from images drawn using a stereomicroscope coupled with a camera lucida. The statistical analysis based on ANOVA (followed by Bonferroni's test), Pearson's correlation matrix, and discriminant analysis enabled discrimination among the populations studied. The variable that most contributed to discriminate among groups was shell height. Mean shell height was greatest for specimens collected...

Morphometric analysis, mimicry, and color polymorphism in five species of Chauliognathus Hentz (Coleoptera, Cantharidae) Zoologia
Machado,Vilmar; Araújo,Aldo M. de; Mosmann,Cleri S..
This study presents data on morphometric variation for length and width of elytra in tive sympatric species of the genus Chauliognathus Hentz, 1830: C. flavipes Fabricius, 1781, C. octomaculatus Pie, 1915, C. expansus Waterhouse, 1878, C. fallax Germar, 1824 and C. lineatus Zwetsch & Machado, 2000. The meaning of this variation is discussed in the light of the theory of mimicry and visual communication between prey and predator. Females are larger than males in all species, except C. expansus. The analysis of variance for length of elytron as well as for width showed that the differences between species are significant for males and females; significant interaction (sex x species) was also found. The similarity in color pattern of these species, as...

Morphometric analysis of Capitella capitata (Polychaeta, Capitellidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Pardo,Erica Veronica; Teixeira,Laura Laund S.; Amaral,Antônia Cecília Z..
Accurate size measurements are fundamental in characterizing the population structure and secondary production of a species. The purpose of this study was to determine the best morphometric parameter to estimate the size of individuals of Capitella capitata (Fabricius, 1780). The morphometric analysis was applied to individuals collected in the intertidal zones of two beaches on the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil: São Francisco and Araçá. The following measurements were taken: the width and length (height) of the 4th, 5th and 7th setigers, and the length of the thoracic region (first nine setigers). The area and volume of these setigers were calculated and a linear regression analysis was applied to the data. The data were log-transformed...

Morphometric Analysis of Developing Maxillary Sinuses in Human Foetuses International Journal of Morphology
Farah,Ghaus; Nafis,Ahmad Faruqi.
The development of the paranasal sinuses, in human race and in many mammals remained as much an enigma as it did nearly two millennia ago. Morphometric analysis of maxillary sinuses in human foetuses are not fully documented and also their morphological studies in Indian population are non-existent. So the present study was conducted to determine the different diameters, the pattern of growth, sexual dimorphism and bilateral variations in maxillary sinuses. 37 human foetuses of different age groups (16 - 34 wks of IUL) were divided into five groups on the basis of age. Maxillary sinuses were dissected out from the nasal aspects of maxillae and their various diameters were measured with the help of Vernier callipers. The percent growth of AP diameter was...

Morphometric Analysis of Granulomas Induced by Mycobacterium bovis Suggests an Influence of IFN-Gamma on the Generation and Modulation upon Granulomatous Inflammatory Response in the Different Tissues International Journal of Morphology
Azevedo Duarte,Tonya; Almeida Barbosa Jr.,Aryon de; Arruda,Sergio.
There is evidence in both human and experimental infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, that immunologic factors influence susceptibility to infection and the progress of the disease. The present study aims to evaluate the role of IFN- g upon inflammatory granulomatous response against M. bovis. To pursue that, C57BL/6 mice lacking the genes for synthesis of IFN- g (IFN- g-/-) and their wild-type counterparts (IFN- g+/+) were intravenously inoculated with M. bovis. The ability of M. bovis to survive and replicate in the liver and lungs was evaluated by counting colony-forming unit (CFU). The histopathological features of granulomatous inflammatory response in the liver and lungs were analyzed during the infection by M. bovis. Granuloma parameters...

Morphometric Analysis of Infraorbital Foramen in Human Foetuses International Journal of Morphology
Farah,Ghaus; Faruqi,N. A..
A detailed knowledge of the anatomic morphometry of infraorbital groove, canal and foramen was necessary for a surgeon while performing maxillofacial surgery and regional block anaesthesia. Modern surgical procedures as well as anaesthesia require more precise understanding of the surrounding anatomy. The aim of the study was to establish morphometrically the infraorbital foramen size and location in human foetuses, the area where this information was scanty. Sixty maxillae were dissected out from thirty human foetuses. The latter were divided into five groups on the basis of age i.e. groups I(<17 weeks IUL),II (17-20 weeks IUL), III (21-25 weeks IUL),IV (26-30 weeks IUL) and V (>30 weeks IUL). Morphometric Analysis of Mice Testicular Tubules after Administration of Malathion and Maca International Journal of Morphology
Bustos-Obregón,Eduardo; del Río,Fernando Costa; Sarabia,Luis.
Organophosphoric (OP) agropesticidas are amply used to increase food production. However, it has been verified that they induce alterations at testicular level related to the diminution of fertility in humans as in animals. On the other hand, different studies have been made to develop chemical or natural compounds that can induce an antagonistic effect to OP. In previous studies an extract from a plant, from the Peruvian Andes (Maca) has been recognized by its stimulating action on spermatogenesis. In the present study the effects of both external agents were evaluated on testicular sections of testis of adult male mice on a population of 52 mice CF1, divided at random in 4 groups (Control, Malathion, Maca, Malathion-Maca), with sacrifice intervals of...

Morphometric Analysis of Populations of Centris aenea Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Apidae) from Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Ferreira,VS; Aguiar,CML; Costa,MA; Silva,JG.
Centris aenea Lepeletier is a solitary bee that has raised interest in management to pollinate crops, such as acerola, Malpighia emarginata. This study investigated the level of morphometric variability among populations of C. aenea from Northeastern Brazil. Traditional and geometric morphometric analyses were used. Head length, leg length, wing length, and wing shape were measured in samples (5-10 females) from eight localities. We did not find statistically significant differences among the populations (P > 0.01). The partial wing warps were similar in the populations and indicated that the bees were not morphometrically different. Our results suggest that C. aenea shows low population morphometric variability and highlight the need for further...
